FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about DTF Printing
Frequently asked questions about DTF printing
Here you will find all the important information about DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing – from the basics and technical details to care instructions. DTF printing is a modern printing technology that enables brilliant colors and photorealistic results on almost all textiles.
What is DTF printing?
What does DTF mean?
DTF stands for "Direct-to-Film". In this process, the design is first printed onto a special transfer film, coated with powder, and then transferred to the textile using a heat press.
What are the advantages of DTF printing?
- Photorealistic print quality with brilliant, vibrant colors
- Suitable for all types of textiles (cotton, polyester, blends, etc.)
- Works equally well on light and dark fabrics.
- No minimum order quantity – even single items are economical
- Gradients and complex designs are easily possible
- High wash resistance and durability
- Soft feel on the fabric
For which products is DTF printing suitable?
DTF printing is ideal for T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, polo shirts, bags, caps, and many other textiles. It is particularly suitable for corporate apparel, event merchandise, promotional gifts, and custom designs.
Technical Requirements & Design
Which file formats are required?
Ideally, high-resolution files in PNG, JPG, PDF, or vector formats (AI, EPS, SVG) are required. The resolution should be at least 300 dpi for optimal print quality.
What print size is possible?
Depending on the printing system, print sizes up to approximately DIN A3 (approx. 30 x 40 cm) are possible. The exact maximum size depends on the fabric and the print position.
How many colors are possible?
DTF printing uses the CMYK color system and can print an unlimited number of colors, gradients, and photorealistic images – a major advantage over other printing methods.
Can white or light designs be printed on dark textiles?
Yes! DTF printing uses a white underlayer (white toner) which ensures that colors appear brilliant and opaque even on dark fabrics.
How detailed can designs be?
DTF printing allows for very fine details, small fonts, and photorealistic images. However, fonts should not be smaller than 4-5 mm to ensure optimal readability.
Can photos be printed?
Yes, DTF printing is perfectly suited for photorealistic images. High-resolution photos are reproduced in brilliant quality.
Materials & Textiles
On which materials does DTF printing work?
DTF printing works on almost all types of textiles:
- Cotton (100%)
- polyester
- Mixed fabric (cotton/polyester)
- nylon
- Canvas
- And many more materials
Does DTF also work on dark fabrics?
Yes, DTF printing is particularly well suited for dark textiles, as the white underlayer ensures optimal color coverage.
Can you also have your own textiles printed?
Yes, we also print on customer-supplied textiles. However, this is only done by prior arrangement and excludes any warranty or liability claims for potential damage. We reserve the right to refuse certain textiles.
Durability & Care
How durable is DTF printing?
DTF prints are very durable and wash-resistant. With proper care, the prints can withstand many washes without any loss of quality.
How should DTF-printed textiles be washed?
Recommended care instructions:
- Wash textiles inside out
- Maximum washing temperature 30-40°C
- Do not use fabric softener.
- Do not tumble dry (air drying preferred)
- Do not iron directly on the print (iron inside out or use an ironing cloth)
- Do not dry clean
You will receive detailed care instructions with your delivery.
How does the pressure feel on the fabric?
DTF prints have a soft, pleasant feel and are elastic. The print is thin and flexible, allowing the fabric to remain breathable.
Ordering & Prices
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No! DTF printing is also economical for single items and small print runs. You can order from as little as 1 piece.
How are the prices calculated?
Prices depend on the print size, the number of print positions, and the quantity. The larger the order quantity, the lower the unit price.
What information do you need to provide a quote?
- Type of textiles (if applicable, item number from our catalog)
- Quantity of textiles
- Print position(s) (e.g., chest, back, sleeves)
- Print size in cm
- Print file in good quality (at least 300 dpi)
Offers are of course free!
Delivery & Production
How long does production take?
The production time is usually 7-14 working days after receipt of payment, depending on the order situation and order volume.
What payment options are available?
We accept PayPal and bank transfer. Prepayment is required for individually printed textiles (exception: B2B customers after credit check).
How much are the shipping costs?
Shipping costs depend on the size and weight of the order. Free shipping can be arranged for larger orders. Currently: DHL/DPD parcel up to 31.5 kg – €9.90 plus VAT.
Do you also deliver abroad?
Yes, we deliver to the entire EU and to Switzerland.
DTF vs. other printing methods
What is the difference between DTF and DTG (Direct-to-Garment)?
DTG prints directly onto the fabric, while DTF prints onto a film first and is then transferred. DTF works on more materials, has better wash resistance, and is also more economical for small print runs.
What is the difference between DTF and screen printing?
Screen printing is ideal for large print runs with few colors, while DTF is economical even for single items and allows for an unlimited number of colors. DTF offers photorealistic quality, whereas screen printing is better suited for single-color or low-color designs.
What is the difference between DTF and Flex/Flock?
Flex/flock are cutting plotter processes using single-color films, while DTF enables multi-colored, photorealistic designs. DTF is more flexible for complex designs, while flex/flock is suitable for simple lettering and logos.
